Entrance Hall

Entrance Hall

The original home on this property was a small two story home called Elm’s Hill. It was owned by Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, father of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and bought by Israel Washburn Sr. in 1810. All of the 10 Washburn children were born in that house.

The Pink Room

The Pink Room

This room was mainly occupied by Maud, Israel Washburn Jr.’s daughter. The dress, which is made of silk, displayed in the room was worn by Israel Jr’s mother-in-law during his wedding to Robina Napier Brown, his second wife. They married after his first wife, Maud, died of Typhoid Fever.

The Blue Room

The Blue Room

Although now set up as a children’s room, this room was used by Algernon Sidney Washburn. The bowling balls next to the trunks at the foot of one of the beds were owned by the family and used in a bowling alley attached to the original Carriage House on the site.

The French Room

The French Room

Primarily used by Elihu and Adele Washburne, and by William Drew and Elizabeth Washburn at a later date. The matching bed and dresser set in this room were originally owned by the youngest son, William Drew. You can see fruit carved into the wood, as fruit symbolism was very popular during the 1800s. The figs seen on the furniture represent wealth and abundance.

The Boston Chamber

The Boston Chamber

Used by Charles Ames Washburn and his wife Sally, and Samuel Washburn and his wife Addie. Charles’ son Thurlow and Samuel’s daughter Katherine were both born in the Boston Chamber, represented by the cradle and other childrens’ items in the room.
